Today's bomb scare/marketing hoax caused some major traffic issues/T delays right? Well, what if this marketing company were forced to pay whatever it costs to run the T for a day or a week so that people could ride for free. This could help in several ways. 1. the company would be forced to pay a major fine. 2. people would get a break on paying for the T and 3. some people might try it out since it's free, which would increase ridership and decrease traffic in the morning/night (not to mention reduce gas consumption.

Either way, I hope this company gets a major fine. Pretty much I'm just lazy. I've come out of hibernation to announce I MIGHT be on TV in about two weeks. Not just local TV, but a channel that basically everyone gets. Of course it is C-Span, so many (meaning almost everyone in the US) will miss it, but those who tune in will get a treat for sure. I'll post more info when/if I know more.

With that being said I've considered closing down Back of the Hill. For one, I haven't lived on Capitol Hill for almost two years, and two, I'm lazy (see second sentence/first paragraph of this post). I have been playing around with the idea of creating a new blog + website, but it would be more focused and probably less interesting to people who read this one (are there any of you left?). No one plays with more grit and determination and I will be sad to see him go. You rarely see anyone play for one team in their entire career anymore, but if there was one person to do it, it would be Trot (unfortunately economics is a bad guy in this case). I'm a fan of their beers, so I figured it would be a good time and I was right. It wasn't very hard to get a beer and everyone seemed to be having a really good time. My only complain was how expensive it was. $12 just to get in the door and then $4.75 a beer. I'd like to know what the profit on this event was. I would think that a beer ticket or two should have been included in the price, but I guess they know they can get more money out of people this way.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun, though I lost my cup as they took it at the Pour House last night. Of course I forgot to get it back when I left. Tonight I went down to the bar Vox to hear a presentation of the newest blogging software called Vox. We're thinking of using it at work until we upgrade our site to handle it's own blog. I'd only been to one other event that featured bloggers (the Personal Democracy Forum in NYC), but this one wasn't as scary as I thought. Bloggers are such unusual creatures, but this event actually featured a lot of "normal" people, but one has to wonder if they were there for the free booze. The presentation was short (in part due to some loud talkers in the back), but the software looked pretty cool. It appears to be an easier to use blog tool, which also doubles as a MySpace-type community builder.

Good night overall. Maybe this blogging thing is so mainstream now that you can't tell a blogger when you see one:)

Thanks to everyone who read my comments on last night's debates. I am really going to try and keep this thing going for a while and see how it goes.

Christy Mihos: Deval Patrick's new best friend

I just got done watching the Massachusetts Gov. debate and Deval Patrick has got to love Christy Mihos right now. The former Republican turned Independent went after Lt. Gov Healy with a vengeance, which meant Patrick could continue to spread his positive message and not go negative. Healy looked very weak and did not do a good job of answering the questions each of the other candidates brought up. Even though there are still about 6 weeks until the election, it's looking like a stronger possibility that the next governor of the state will be Deval Patrick. If anything tonight, Mihos might have taken a few more voters away from Healy, which would be devastating to her chances in November.

So who won? Clearly Deval is a winner as Healy failed to paint him as a liberal as she needed to do. The other winner is Mihos who got his name out there more and probably appeals to many Republicans, who might not like how right this Administration has become as Romney wants to run for President. The big loser is obviously Healy, who seemed weak and unable to defend the Administrations positions on a variety of issues, but most importantly the Big Dig.

As for Grace Ross of the Green Party? Well, she got some issues out there, but really isn't much of a factor in this race.

Bill Clinton is the man

Today Fox News aired an interview of Bill Clinton by Chris Wallace. The interview was supposed to be mostly about the Clinton Global Initiative. Well the third question in went something like this.

Chris Wallace: …but the question is why didn’t you do more? Connect the dots and put them out of business?

Now this is one of Fox News' greatest tricks. Ask a question like it's already a fact that Clinton should have done more. Well, Clinton reminded me what a President of the US should be. He stood up and fought back. You can see a clip by clicking here.

Fox News has always had one set of questions for Republicans and one set for the Democrats. It's about time a Democrat stood up and fought such a ridiculous framing of a question.

If you couldn't tell, I hate Fox News. I'm not sure how they get away with the word "news" in their name to be honest.

I wish Clinton were still President.

Firedoglake - Destroying the Democratic Party

Those of you know me, know that I am a moderate Democrat. My extreme displeasure with how this Administration had handled, well, everything is pretty clear. But today I must turn my attention to one of the most ridiculous sites on the net, Firedoglake.

This site claims to help progressives, but what they're really doing is dividing the Democratic party. Just look at some of the comments on there if anyone has the audacity to support Senator Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Senate race. Just simply some terribly slanderous stuff in there. Also look at what they've done to NARAL, which is one of the most widely respected pro-choice groups in America. Simply because they're endorsing the incumbent in the race, they have written very off-key things about the organization and have made it personal by attacking their President directly. It's embarrassing as a Democrat to see this type of behavior. According to them, moderates have no place in the party. Though I have to wonder about the NARAL thing as previously they had negative things to say about Planned Parenthood as well, but they are now a recent advertiser on the site and since then, the attacks on them have stopped. hmmmm.

I attempted to post a comment on their NARAL attack, and mysteriously it disappeared after a couple minutes. There were no curse words, no personal attacks, simply an honest opinion on why NARAL should and HAD to endorse Lieberman (How do you not endorse a pro-choice incumbent?). It was removed without comment. I emailed them two days ago about this, but apparently it is not important to them to listen to other opinions.

In order for Democrats to win, they must stay united. Blogs like Firedoglake split the party and bring out the worst in politics. They should be more like Deval Patrick, who is spreading a positive message in Massachusetts. Instead they smear and call people names that even I can't mention.

So I ask that people stop going to trashy sites like theirs. Don't give these people any support.

Deval Patrick for Governor

Some of you read my endorsement of Chris Gabrieli the other day for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Massachusetts. Well today was primary day and the Democrats of Massachusetts have selected Deval Patrick to be their next Governor. As Chris has conceeded, I will put my full support behind Deval. I think he is far superior to his opponent (who tried to influence the Democratic primary by running attack ads - very weak). He is pro Cape Wind, pro-choice, pro-stem cell research and supports everyone's right to marry. He'll be a great governor for this state and I whole-heartedly support him.

Chris Gabrieli for Governor

Living in the nation's capitol for four years, one would think I'd have my fill with politics. The funny thing is that DC has no voting rights, so I haven't been able to participate in more local politics in some time. So I went into the 2006 Democratic primary with open ears and eyes. Three men of differing backgrounds were running. One, the long time Attorney General and Boston insider. Another a former Clinton official and corporate lawyer in the mold of Barack Obama. And the final one a politically moderate businessman who has generated jobs, innovative programs and stem-cell research initiatives. You might guess that the final person is the one I will be voting for on Tuesday. His name is Chris Gabrieli.

It is time for a governor who is not focused on politics, but on results. Gabrieli supports Cape Wind, responsible roll back of the income tax, investment in new technologies and research (including stem-cell research), and is staunchly pro-choice.

The Washington Post recently said that if Gabrieli is nominated, the election is his for the taking. Why take a chance on another candidate when Gabrieli is the Dems best chance at taking back the governor's office?

First I hope all Democrats vote on Tuesday, and second I hope they cast their vote for Chris Gabrieli.

Five years later....

Can it really be that it's been five years since 9/11? Unbelievable that it was that long ago. So many things have changed since then (both in my life and the world). I haven't really talked much about that day or how it affected me, but maybe five years later is a time to relect on it. My experience cannot compare to those in who were in lower Manhattan or the Pentagon (let alone the planes), but my experience just goes to show how terrible that day truly was.

I was sitting at my desk starting at about 8:00 and it just seemed like another Tuesday in DC. Nothing special was happening, my boss and another co-worker were out of town, so it looked like it would just be a day like any other. Then one of my other co-workers said her Mom had called and they heard a small plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. My immediate thought was that it was a small prop-plane with some inexperienced pilot. We turned on the news and that's exactly what it looked like at first. The reporters were calm and there were no up close pictures at this point.

Several minutes passed and then I saw what looked like another plane approaching and then it smashed into the other tower. The mood changed dramatically. Everyone knew something unusual was going on. People began to worry about friends and family in New York. I even spoke to my Dad (who was at work with no TV) and were amazed at what was going on. How could this be happening? It was all so very surreal. People were either glued to the TV, internet or calling others to see what the hell was going on.

And then we heard the Pentagon was hit. Now it was in our city. I felt like I was punched in the stomach. I can honestly say I've never been scared like that before. It's a feeling I will never forget. I had no idea what to do. Should I stay in the building? Should I try to get out to my house in Virginia? I talked again with my Dad and was trying to sound as calm as possible, because I can only imagine what he was feeling. I don't know if it showed, but I was scared for real. Thinking about it now gives me chills. How do you say your city has been hit by a terrorist attack, but that everything is ok? It was about to get worse.

We then heard a plane was missing, but the thought was it was coming towards DC. We also heard the Mall was on fire, bombs were at the FBI building (one block from our office), State Department, the Metro, everywhere. Rumors were just flying around. We were trapped. We were soon told to move away from the offices with windows and move more inside the building. Then we saw the Towers start collapsing. It all didn't seem possible. How was this happening?

This all happened in about three hours, but it felt like minutes. Finally things seemed to be over, and I made the decision I needed to get out of the city. Who knew if the Metro would stay open (I believe it had been shut down for parts of the morning)? I got out and had the worst Metro ride of my life. It was just complete silence. One woman cried across from me. Just a horrible feeling.

I got home and saw we had (I lived with two friends at the time) about 20-25 voicemail's. People just wanted to make sure we were all right. I spent the rest of the day on the phone talking about what the hell happened. I heard F-16's flying over all day and all night. I stopped watching the news at some point. I just couldn't take it anymore. The images of the planes and people jumping out of the buildings is something I will never forgot, nor ever get over.

The most amazing thing I thought was America's response. People putting out the flag and putting them all over offices, homes, cars, etc. It truly made me proud to be an American. And I have to say, seeing President Bush standing on top of the rubble was exactly what the country needed at the time. Also, reading and hearing about the brave firefighters and police offices made me realize how amazing people are at times of crisis.

So where are we five years later? I don't have a clue. We have lost the support of much of the world and are fighting a war that had nothing to do with 9/11. We have obviously has successes as well, but one has to wonder how much better off we are now than on that horrible day. Iran is becoming a world power, North Korea is building bigger and better missile's, Afghanistan is getting worse and Iraq is, well Iraq.

At the end of the day it is something that we as a nation will never forget. I just hope it is something we never have to deal with again.

For Jeff

I got a recent complaint that I hadn't written on here enough, so here goes. This will be a rant.

Does anyone else hate the new Charlie system for the T? I mean, I'm all for the passes and everything, but the new turnstyles SUCK. They are slow, have to close behind every person, and make the worst sound every time someone goes through. Plus you have to put the cards in upside down. WHAT? What is the over/under on someone breaking those doors? A day maybe? Horrible system. Also, the current setup doesn't work in busy stops because people have to crowd around the machines and there is not enough room for people will passes to walk by them. Why didn't they just use the DC Metro system? It's quicker, easier and seems more simple. Just another great job by the MBTA.

People at the Cambridge Shaws/Star Market. Is it possible to not leave your cart in the middle of the isle so that people can get by? I was there yesterday and this happened to me about 10 times. The best is that people just look at you when you walk by. It's unbelievable.

Should I even talk about the Sox? No, not a good idea. Though the latest version of David Pauley appeared tonight and his name is Kason Gabbard.

Oh and today is my birthday.

I'm actually thinking about writing something on here that would actually be profound in a couple days. This is directly below my bedroom window in Central Square. This is the site of many screaming kids, homeless fights and really noisy street cleaners. I'm leaving the snowy weather of Cambridge to head "way" south to DC for the weekend. The Sox will be in Baltimore and I'll be catching the Saturday game. Our flight was canceled, so I got on a red eye 10 hours later than I was supposed to leave and got in at 6:00 am. Sweet since I had to go immediately to work. Being up 34 hours straight isn't fun.

Anyway, we had a blast and I did not lose a ton of money. I won some and I lost some. Let me tell you there isn't much of a greater high than rolling big on a craps table. People screaming, money being thrown at you, it was great. I have to admit being a frugal New Englander made it tough to gamble, but I got used to it real quick. That being said, I won't be back to Vegas for some time. That place sucks the life out of you. No windows, clocks, decency, anything. Out of control. If you want to go, I recommend 2-3 days, not 4 like I did. Trust me, you don't need it.

Great place to go though. I am addicted to craps. Also, I am the worst sports better of all time. I was 0-4 this weekend. If it weren't for that I would have been a big winner. Damn you NCAA tournament!

Oh and even though I brought my camera I took zero pictures. Well, I've been lacking in the creativity department lately, but I'll give it a go here.

Friday I head to Vegas for the first time. Having never been, I'm a little nervous about blowing through all my money at the beginning. A little self control and I should be fine. Oh they have free drinks? Never mind, I am SCREWED.

The weather in Boston has not been fun lately (I don't want to hear it Jeff). 60's one day, 25 the next. Can I get some more steady temperatures here? Somehow I haven't gotten sick from all this. Spring is here, but you wouldn't know it.

If you had Wichita State and George Mason in the Sweet 16, the there are some lines I need your help with...

I saw Queen with Paul Rodgers two weeks ago. It's nice to know some bands are still out there playing live, loud and putting on a great show. Upcoming concerts: Death Cab for Cutie/Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, and my favs, Wilco.

Unfortunately my life is relatively boring at the moment, so I don't have much else to say. I could recap the reviting story of transfering my 401(k) retirement plan into my new job's 403(b) plan, but that might just leave people clamoring for more posts that I will inevitably fall short on.

I hope to have pics and stories (well, maybe not stories) from Vegas when I return.

War protestors in Central Square? What is the point?

I wonder this every day I ignore these people as I go home. Why are they protesting the war in Iraq in Central Square - the bastion of liberalism? Ever heard the phrase "preaching to the choir?" So they sit in the freezing cold to tell everyone they are opposed to a war probably 90% of Cambridge is opposed too? Boy, you're really getting your point across and making a difference.

I'd like to point out I dislike W. as much as the next guy, but maybe if these people put their minds to a tangible goal, they might see some actual change. What about encouraging people to take mass transit, but a hybrid or purchase an energy efficient light bulb? These are easy ways to help ween us off oil dependence. Of course that's not a "sexy" way to get us out of Iraq, but it's probably the most sensible.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://backofthehill.blogspot.com/2006/03/war-protestors-in-central-square-what.html' title='War protestors in Central Square? Comedians have mocked it, people cringe at it, yet it is still always said when it is cold out side. That being said, it is really f*cking cold out there (DeRosa if you are reading this I don't want to hear it). Today it hit 25 I think, but the windchill brought it to 0. That's right, 0. Interestingly enough, this is the coldest week of the year. When I moved here, I expected months of misery. Well, December and January were fine and so was most of February. I assume now that I've said that March and April will absolutely blow, but whatever.

What I'm real interested in, is seeing Boston for St. Patrick's Day, which is rapidly approaching. No amount of cold weather can keep me from experiencing that (and having done Patty's day in other cities, I will not even feel the weather when I'm done with that day).

I love this thing

One of my xmas presents was a Sirius satellite radio. At first I wondered if I really knew what I asked for. Did I really want to pay for radio? Well the answer is a resounding yes. This thing is amazing. Not only are there no commercials or many DJ interruptions, but you can pause the damn thing. Yes, that's right, you can pause the radio. And then you can fast forward by song. It's incredible. My favorite channel so far is Left of Center (otherwise known as channel 26). Lot's of great new songs, but they do repeat a lot ("The Fallen" by Franz Ferdinand is an AWESOME song, but do I need to hear it 2-3 times every couple hours?).

This is worth the $13/month. Plus I can use it at work. Always comes in handy when you share an office.

And yes I am a gadget dork.

The win of the century

No I'm not talking about the Red Sox winning the World Series. I'm talking about my men's league team upsetting the #2 team in the second round of the playoffs. With no one over 6'3 (in a league where most teams have at least 2 guys at 6'4), we beat them by 9. I, however did not play very well. Some of you know I don't do a very good job of keeping my mouth shut on the court. Well I got a major elbow to the chest and I did not like it very much. Let's just say the next time down the court the guy attached to that elbow tried to take a shot. Seconds later we were all standing behind him as he took two shots after an intentional foul (funny for a guy who has never been in a fight and would probably run away if challenged).... Anyway we won and word on the street is that next week we play a team we already beat. Cinderella is on the move.

For some reason, I've not been good at updating this thing lately. Sorry about that. We were down by 12 with 10:00 to play and the other team decided it needed to keep chucking up threes. Wrong move. We put on a pretty impressive run. After getting screwed by the refs in the first half (10 fouls to 3!), we got just about all the calls in the second. Pretty amusing. Plus they only had five guys and one got hurt at the end.

I tell you though playing with old men really sucks. I've never been elbowed and pushed in the back more in my life. Well you don't really. I was home for Xmas and had a great time seeing my family and friends. Saw some people I hadn't seen in a while and we finally got around to having the Sweater Dinner, which is pictured here. That's right, grown men dressing up in sweaters and going to dinner. What could be more fun than that?

New Year's was spent down here and it was a good time. I always find it is a let down, but this year was great. Too many stories (some too innapropriate probably) to mention here, but it was fun.

And finally I have to give props to SNL for FINALLY coming up with a funny sketch. Two years on varsity at good old Morse High, and some summer league action with the Zupiss. Ever since the summer of 2000 I have literally not played a full court game of bball. Well tonight was my return and I still am not sure how I think I did.

We get there and look at the other team and think we have a shot (me, Tatties and Page that is). Tatties and I sit out because we are just guesting on this team tonight. Wow, we sucked. The other team ran circles around us. Our team apparently has never picked up a bball before. Anyway I think I did ok. I scored either 8 or 10 points, but learned I should not be chucking up threes anymore (0-2 and not close to going in). I was pretty winded and found my old rage coming back when some guy kept saying "and 1" every time he drove the lane. I tried to solve this by driving my knee into his leg as he passed me (sending him to the ground and me happily accepting the foul), but he kept going. Dude you won by 30 give it up.

Anyway, it was a good time and I need the exercise so I'm glad I went. Some historians are starting to discuss whether George W. Bush is the worst president EVER. Now I don't go for that, but seems people have finally gotten around to the fact that he is NOT a good President at least. Read this article in it's entirety, but these bullet points are very interesting.

"This is what those historians said -- and it should be noted that some of the criticism about deficit spending and misuse of the military came from self-identified conservatives -- about the Bush record:

He has taken the country into an unwinnable war and alienated friend and foe alike in the process;

He is bankrupting the country with a combination of aggressive military spending and reduced taxation of the rich;

He has deliberately and dangerously attacked separation of church and state;

He has repeatedly "misled," to use a kind word, the American people on affairs domestic and foreign;

He has proved to be incompetent in affairs domestic (New Orleans) and foreign (Iraq)and the battle against al-Qaida);

He has sacrificed American employment (including the toleration of pension and benefit elimination) to increase overall productivity;

He is ignorantly hostile to science and technological progress;

He has tolerated or ignored one of the republic's oldest problems, corporate cheating in supplying the military in wartime."

Ouch. Those are some fighting words. Of course the best indicator of a good/bad President is time, which we unfortunately still have with this President.

Who needs a GM?

Wow, I still am in shock. Pending some paperwork, the Sox just traded Hanley Ramirez, Anibel Sanchez for JOSH FREAKIN BECKETT and Mike Lowell. We just got a certified Yankee killer and he's only 25. What a trade. Coco (my cat) finally gave in. After 20 years and almost 5 months, she finally called it quits. Deaf over the last three years and arthritis getting worse, she made her final trip to the vet yesterday (and first in over 5 years) to say goodbye. She was old. So old that she was older than:

TiVo
DVDs
CDs
The Simpsons
Bill Buckner (nuff ced)
Lindsay Lohan
cell phones
The Real World
The fall of the Berlin Wall
The Challenger explosion

4 Presidents came and went (well, the fourth can't leave soon enough) and she saw three dogs and another cat come through the doors of 3 Barque Road. I discovered that our building has a gym. It's about the toughest thing to find (through the garage, an unmarked door and to your right), but I found it. I got there at about 5:30 tonight and no one was there. Inside I found pretty new equipment. TV's on the treadmills, a radio, and a water cooler. I actually spent a full hour in there. Now here is the crazy part, I didn't just use the treadmill, but I also used the weights. Now I don't know what I'm doing, and I'm probably hurting myself, but I thought I'd give it a try. Something tells me I'm going to be very sore in the morning.

I'm one step closer to being tough. The extra kicker is that the Assistant GM Josh Byrnes left to become GM of the Diamondbacks. Oh god the pain is excrutiating right now. I don't even know what to say. I'm still 21 right?

Wedding Crashers

We didn't actually crash a party, we were really invited. My friend Sam from Dickinson got married this weekend. It was a mini-Dickinson reunion of sorts. It also marked the first time I'd ever rented a car. I got upgraded to a Saab, which I thought was sweet until it turned out to be one of their new "younger" cars which sucked really bad. Random thoughts about this weekend that will probably not make sense unless you were there.

It is not appropriate to swear in a church

It is not appropriate to hit on your friends Mom

It is not appropriate to pick up the bride and hold her over your head

It is not appropriate to scream "I beat women" as a joke

It IS appropriate to drink a lot at a wedding

Frankly I'm not creative enough to write anymore. I am sick and tired of it. Tatties, Bob and I went to the Pour House on Boylston Street and it was miserable getting there through the rain. Who wants to take a jacket into the bar? It sucks and I hate it.

The bar was fun. We watched some kid get dragged out wasted and puking on himself. They we played photohunt and golden tee while drinking these massive beers (hence today's headache). Some guy was handing out Zippo lighters so I pretended to be a smoker so I could get one (apparently I smoke Parlament Lights??). The lighter has no lighter fluid, so I guess it's useless.

Today it's off to Teale Square for some poker and maybe a little more drinking. As we were looking through the different options I told her I only wanted the bottom sheet and the pillow cases. Of course they don't come like that. She asked why I didn't want the top sheet. When I replied I never use a top sheet (only my comforter), she was very surprised. I explained that no guys use top sheets. She replied girls like top sheets. Why is it that guys hate top sheets and girls like them? This I don't understand. I personally HATE the top sheet and can't deal if I'm in a hotel room with one. Very clean, nice roof deck, and a gym (which I obviously haven't used). Everything has been great for the first four months I've lived here, but now I'm ticked. They turned our A/C off even though it's been mid to high 70's all week. My room has one window overlooking the beautiful Star Variety Market where there is a noisy bus stop (and last night a very loud aspiring singer/rapper waiting for said bus). We emailed our building Manager and they assured us it was out of their control, as they follow Massachusetts law. Now I'm pretty sure the laws were put in place to force the A/C on when it's hot, but not to turn it off. I highly doubt there is a law in this crazy state mandating the A/C be turned off. Unbelievable.

So to all you friendster people out there. Make sure you have a decent picture up there. It makes a world of difference.

Gambling is fun

Is there really anything more fun than gambling? My friends in Teale Square (maybe the best Square in the Boston area behind Central of course) introduced me to Texas Hold 'em poker. It's a lot of fun. Granted I really suck, but it's getting easier and I've won a couple times.

Now that I am a gambling pro, I am heading out to Vegas for March Madness. Yes it's about 6 months away, but I'm already excited. Betting on college hoops, hitting the craps table and enjoying some warm weather (as I'm sure Beantown will be miserable still) sounds like a good idea to me.

To warm up I'm in a football pick 'em pool every week. This was my second week (was at a conference the first week) and I won $18. My biggest gambling winnings ever, but after Vegas, I hope that record is shattered. Otherwise I might not be able to post on here because I'll have to sell my laptop to cover my new "addiction."

Would this make a good book

I'm not sure I can explain this appropriately, but I'll try. My friends from home and I have had an email list since most of us went off to college. It has shrunk, expanded, shrunk and then leveled off to what it is today (about 10-12 of us). This list has basically kept us up to date on everyone. Some of us are in LA, Missouri, soon to be entertains, DC, Boston and of course Bath. We talk about everything on there. It's great. I really don't know anyone else who has a group of friends like this. We were thinking it would make a great book. I think it would be great for us, but I'm not sure anyone would buy it. Basically this is how I see it. A book detailing each of our lives and how it all goes back to the list. I don't know, the more I write about this, the more it sounds stupid. I have some classic emails though (the one my friend Billy wrote about Lee Greenwood causing 9/11 still makes me laugh). It could be good. I don't know. Anyone have any thoughts? And no, I don't want thoughts from advertisers who like to write in my comments section.

A Message to Red Sox Nation

I haven't written a lot about the Sox on here because I feel like last year spoke for it's self and there really isn't anything to say. It's ok, because I know you are too. Since I moved to Boston I've been interested to see who else is on it from the area. Well now I am scared to look. Now you can view who has looked at your profile. WHAT? That's awesome to see who has looked at you, but now people know when you look too. What happens I'm walking down Mass Ave. and someone sees you that noticed you looked at their profile like 10 times (um, I've never done that, I'm just saying). This has the potential to make me spend even more time on the damn site. What brought me to this conclusion? Congressman Tom Delay was indicted today on conspiracy charges related to campaign finance laws. Delay is what's bad about DC. Politicians that care more about party politics than getting things done. He made a career out of ruining other people to protect himself. Granted their are these people on both sides of the isle, but this man is simply revolting. I could almost hear the entire city of Boston cheer his downfall. This man is a joke and needs to go.

Speaking of jokes, did anyone see Mike Brown's pathetic testimony in the House yesterday? The best thing is the music that they have introduced me too. I recently got the new Death Cab fo Cutie CD Plans (you can get it here for like $13 with shipping), and I love it. This CD is great. It's relatively mellow, but it has something for everyone. I especially like tracks #1, #2 #5 and #6. "I Will Follow You into the Dark" is a fantastic acoustic song. It's a CD I feel a lot of people could get into if they knew it existed. I'm going to have to get some of their other stuff to compare.

Plus, it was recorded in North Brookfield, MA so it has to be good right? It was a hard decision, but one I am certainly not regretting. Sure I miss my friends and everything, but after 4 years I'd had enough.

So I moved up here and am having a blast. I am running into a dilemma though. I have a few really good friends down here that I know I'll always have a good time with, but I don't really meet anyone new. On the other hand, I know a few people not as well that sometimes ask me to do stuff as well. Do I go with the guaranteed good time or try new things? The Bath boy in me says stay with the good time, but the DC in me says try new things. I would like to get to know Boston a little better, so maybe that is the right approach. Who knows, in both cases I'm sure to get really, really drunk and humiliate myself. Hmm, maybe I should just stick with the people I know.......

Fiscally Conservative Democrats?

You know what? They are real. How do I know? Well, I'm one of them (and I live in liberal, liberal Cambridge). One of the biggest concerns I have about the current Administration is their utter lack of any fiscal responsibility. We have a war in Iraq and reconstruction of Katrina that will cost $200 billion EACH. We're not even talking about what is going to happen with Hurricane Rita which is currently a category 5 hurricane in the Gulf. This President has increased our deficit by massive amounts so that someone else will have to clean up our mess. Bush cut taxes and revenues have not increased proving the point that trickle down economics DON'T work.

I can't stand the governments utter lack of responsibility when it comes to money. I know there are thousands of you out there literally hitting refresh on this thing all day long, so here is a much needed update.

My life has been consumed with the work, Red Sox and drinking (not necessarily in that order). Work has been tough because of the Hurricane, the Red Sox are in first place, and drinking..... well that is just fun. In the words of the immortal Ron Burgundy, I have tried to pick up this new phenomenon called Jogging. I still haven't figured out if it's with a hard or soft J yet, but I even went out and bought some new running shoes. It's been hard to go regularly, but it I think it's a fad that is here to stay.

I find that living in one of the most liberal cities in America (Cambridge, not Boston) has made me both more liberal and more conservative if that makes sense. More liberal in that I am around more people now who actually realize that George W. Bush is one of the worst Presidents we've had in my lifetime, but also more conservative because I cannot stand the panhandle that goes on outside my apartment. Can't we just enforce the law and make them stop? I don't feel bad for them. Sorry, there I said it. It's really annoying.

Why doesn't anyone ever post comments on here anymore? That's one of the highlights of my day. Seeing that someone actually read what I said. Of course writing about things like Skype probably doesn't help my cause.

Seriously if you're not watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" I don't know what's wrong with you. It's seriously one of the most hilarious shows on TV. It's up there with "Arrested Development" and "The Daily Show."

We're having a housewarming party next weekend. My roommates will finally witness my friends. I'm not sure I'm ready for that. Oh well, it will be entertaining.

There have been some really hilarious/amazing events I've been involved with over the last month, but since too many people who read this know who I am, I must protect the innocent.

That's it for now. I'm going to try and get back in the habit of writing again. Of course I now just guaranteed the next post will come in like 4 weeks or something.

Since I live in Cambridge now

I guess it's a good time to roll out my displeasure with the right wing of this country. It's interesting that most of the problems they complain about happen in their own states enjoy. This is from a posting on Craigslist.

"Dear Red States..." A Letter From The Blue!
Dear Red States...We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, andwe're taking the other Blue States with us.In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast.

We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especiallyto the people of the new country of New California. To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get ElliotSpitzer. You get Ken Lay.We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. Youget Alabama. We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red statespay their fair share. Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq atonce. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They havekids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for nopurpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of theirchildren's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, andhope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend ourresources in Bush's Quagmire

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percentof the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineappleand lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias andcondors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health carecosts), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of thetornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all SouthernBaptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia. We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah wasactually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacredunless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent saythat evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involvedin 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy b*****ds believe you are peoplewith higher morals then we lefties.By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. Streaking.

That's right. In tonight's Sox-Tigers game, some dude ran onto the field naked and started doing cartwheels. Rem Dog and Orsillo (Sox announcers) were dying in the booth. Just laughing hysterically. I love those guys. People were shielding their kids eyes and everyone was laughing. The police handcuffed the guy with his hands behind his back. Good idea until you realize this is a streaker. Not a good show. They walked him up through the crowd. What a night. Someone even took a picture. Hilarious.

Politicians from both parties condemn Marrs hateful letter

Another article in the Times-Dispatch today. I like a song by Kelly Clarkson. Yes it's true. "Since U Been Gone" is a great song. It's taken me a while to admit it. It helps that a couple of my friends (their names will be protected here) have admitted to liking the song as well. It's catchy, actually has real instruments and she sounds good (though I've heard her do it live and it beats). Coming from someone who is somewhat of a self professed music snob (I'd much rather listen to "Being There" than the radio, and if you don't know who recorded that album it just further proves my point).

So there you have it. I guess Simon and crew aren't wrong all the time (see Clay Aiken as example of wrong).

Settling in

It's weird. I haven't had any of those "I miss DC" moments since I got up here. I mean, I miss my friends, but am not regretting the move at all. Boston has been a lot of fun, and a much needed change of scenery. I still have no clue where I am going 90% of the time, but everyone has been helpful in showing me the way. Tonight I'm heading into the North End, and have no idea where I'm going. I guess I'll take a cab. They should know how to get there. I'm hanging out with a bunch of Dickinson friends tonight. Should be interesting. The plan is to get "really F'd up," so I'm sure there will be stories. Maybe I'll even write about them here. Well, probably not, but keep checking just in case.

Schmeavie

You've never heard of it, but it's one of the best drinking games in the world. My friend Tatties started it and anyone who has played, loves it. Basically it's a one on one game in which each player sits at the other end of the table with a beer in front of them on it. Then, there is a die. You try to throw it off the end of the table and get to 11. It's great. There is talk of starting a Schmevie website. We'll see if that happens.

The reason I bring it up is that we played it last night and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot. Of course I suck, so there was much drinking to be had. Everyone needs to know about this game. It is amazing. The last time I played was 5 years ago at the 'Cuse, so it was good to get back into it.

New City, New Job, New Life

My four year run in D.C. came to a close on Thursday as we packed up the U-Haul and headed to Cambridge, MA (or very, very close to Boston). Though we hit massive traffic from DC to Baltimore, dealt with horrendous directions from AAA, and had a broken down truck, all is well. I have settled into my new place and really like it. Work still needs to be done in my room and the living room, but those who know me would be shocked at the level of completeness and non messiness that is my new room.

So far I am loving the new place. I have seen several of my friends from home, and am looking forward to settling in here for a while. With that brings questions as to whether I can continue writing this blog, or if a new one should be created. I almost think a new one must be formed with some terrible play on words related to Boston, the Sox or something like that. I am not terribly creative, so I'm sure it will leave you questioning what the hell I was thinking.

Tomorrow starts my new life in my new office. I've met these people before for orientation, so I know I'm going into a good situation. Went to a Kentucky Derby party in the afternoon. Played some Beirut and bet on some horses (which is good since I know nothing about horse racing). The highlight was that again Steinbrenner lost with his horse. Nothing has been more fun than watching him squirm this year.

On the way to the second party we stopped down on the Southwest Waterfront for some food. Well I didn't know there are some take out seafood places down there. They are actually pretty good, which is saying something since D.C. seafood sucks miserably in general (if you're not in Maine, it pretty much sucks anyway).

The Georgetown party was packed. Got to see a lot of people I hadn't seen in a while which was good. Four kegs were kicked around 11:00. I've never seen beer go so fast before. We decided it would be a good idea to go out in Georgetown after. Great idea. Had one beer and was done. To give you an idea of how I was feeling, I woke up on the couch this morning and thought I was in my bed. Good work.

Not sure what the point of this was supposed to be, but there you go.

Back from Jamaica

I'm back from Jamaica as tan as can be. Of course that tan was once sunburn, so I did go through some pain to get here. Jamaica was a lot of fun and it's tough to be back here with 50-60 degree weather. I'd never been before and it was an interesting experience. The water was great, most of the people were great, but there was one thing about the trip that was bad.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES. Worst people in the airport ever. Our flight was diverted due to an electrical problem. The captain and crew were great, but the people in the terminal were atrocious. They kept saying we'd know more in 30 minutes every 30 minutes. Really annoying. Lie after lie was told. We didn't leave until the next day. They suck.

That was at the beginning of the trip, and the rest was great. Now it's back to life in D.C., for now......

Jamaica tomorrow

It has been a long time since I've been on a vacation outside of New England, but that is about to end. I am heading to Jamaica tomorrow with my family and can't wait. We're going to be gone for a week. Should be a good time. I know no one would notice on here as I rarely post, but I just thought I'd let everyone (meaning the no people who look at this), that I'll be gone. My friend Molly is running the campaign for Katherine Waddell, who is running as an Independent. Here is the press release from her announcement today. Well over 100 people showed up to support here. Very impressive for a state race!

Katherine Waddell Pledges Positive Change
In Campaign for House of Delegates

RICHMOND, VA- Katherine Waddell officially announced her candidacy for the 68th House of Delegates District today at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center. Waddell, well known for her efforts in a wide variety of political and community efforts, offered details of her campaign by promising voters a clear choice that will replace today’s status quo in the General Assembly with action on issues that unite us for positive change.

Waddell is running as an Independent and hopes to unite Independent, Democrat and Republican voters behind her call for positive change and new priorities in the General Assembly. As an Independent, she says her constituents, not politics, will guide her service in the House of Delegates. “Independents, Democrats and Republicans are united for action on education, transportation, public safety, and health care,” Waddell said. “The status quo spends too much time on the social issues that divide us at the expense of issues that unite us.”

Waddell defined her political philosophy as “traditionally conservative”, and believes in low taxes, limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual freedom and the right to privacy.” Waddell’s speech drew clear distinctions between her views and the agenda of “social extremists.” She opposes government intervening in private decisions regarding reproductive issues and the right to die. She believes those decisions do not belong in politics and should be handled by individuals and families.

Waddell detailed her action plans as she defined the theme of “positive change” in the following areas: higher salaries for teachers; a funded long-term plan for transportation; a focus to eliminate the money that fuels and funds the drug economy, which is primarily responsible for violent crime; encourage business and families to purchase long term care insurance to help reform Medicaid; and tort reform to ensure quality, affordable and accessible health care.

Promising to knock on all the doors of citizens living in the 68th District, which includes portions of the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County, Waddell and her supporters launched a campaign that will be one of the most closely watched races for the House of Delegates. Waddell’s campaign has already won financial support from a finance committee with members who represent a diverse and broad variety of interests in the political and business communities.

Molly Jackson, who has worked on national political efforts, will manage her campaign. Veteran political consultant, Scott Gregory will be her consultant. Ron Wilner, who has been involved in numerous winning Virginia campaigns, will be her media consultant and Mason Dixon will provide polling services.

Before her speech, speakers representing Independents, Democrats and Republicans endorsed Waddell and described her as one of the most qualified non-incumbents on the ballot this year. Her resume includes jobs in the offices of the Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and State Senate. She founded the Virginia Republican Majority for Choice and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Katherine Waddell is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and Averett College. She is married to John Waddell and has two daughters and three grandchildren.

Ramblings

I really suck at this updating thing. At least it wasn't a full month or anything. I've had a lot going on since the last post. Here are some of those, plus some random ramblings as they seem to be a major part of other peoples blogs (ie blogs that people read).

I went to the eye doctor last month for a scratchy eye and came home with reading glasses. How the hell did that happen? I'm still not really comfortable with anyone seeing them, but I'm getting better at wearing them. They do seem to help keep my eyes from getting tired at the end of the day. Who knew glasses worked?

I've started to learn how to play guitar. Well what they say is true, it is really, really, really hard. No songs yet. I'd like to just be able to remember all the major chords. Don't even talk to me about minor chords or scales. You might as well speak Korean to me.

How is Corel not on the latest Real World/Road Rules Challenge? Is it even allowed that she not participate? She couldn't have gotten a job or something? Haha, of course not.

I've starting running for the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure again. It's 5K, but it helps get me in shape and raise money for a good cause. If you want to donate to my race, log on to www.nationalraceforthecure.org and type in my name.

That Sox game really sucked last night. Wells looked about 50 years old, not 41.

That's about it for now. My next post will probably be in another month if you're not lucky. I'll try to be better next time.

I'm bad

Yeah, I know no one reads this, but I was supposed to post once a week. I think it's been a month. All zero of the people who read this must be very upset.

This week I got more sick than I've been in a long time. Missed 1.5 days of work and still don't feel very good. I guess I was due. Sitting on the couch for a day and a half is never fun though.

Isn't it great that baseball is back? That period between the end of the NFL season and spring training is brutal. Opening day is now about three weeks away and I can't wait.

I've been finding myself following the Celtics with more interest lately. I was all about the C's trading Toine last year, but it's great to have him back. He seems to fit a lot better this time around. I watched the entire 4 hour race and it was so boring. How could anyone really like this? Well, I'm drunk, so maybe someone c0uld like it. Yes, so this is probably the only time I'll have an email, and yes it's only one, but it's still the mailbag. Here we go.

Is Youkilis taking over first base duties for the Sox this year when Millar starts his inevitable mid-season slump? Should we be putting bets down on which batting stance he will change to once his slump begins. He's already tried Gary Sheffield's bag wag and Johnny Damon's open stance. I think he's going to tackle the Julio Franco "bat over the head" stance next. Remember that one? That was always fun to do in backyard wiffleball.

Youks will probably not see much action at first this year. Millar has been working out hard this off-season as it's his contract year. I expect some decent, though not 2003 numbers from Millar. Plus, the Sox signed former Japanese star Roberto Petagine to compete with McCarty for the backup role. He's got a strong bat and good glove. Apparently his wife is 20 years older and caused a lot of problems in Japan. Who knows if he's any good. Plus, Mueller just had knee surgery, so it's a big question mark how much Billy will play third this year. That puts Youks as our starting third baseman.

Well, that was fun. Remember to email me your questions and comments to timfullerton@gmail.com. I bought a 98 VW Passat last week. 5 speed turbo, sunroof, 6 disk changer, 85,000 miles. Really good deal. My first time negotiating something of that price. I think I did a pretty good job. It looks brand new. The worst part was dealing with the DMV and inspection. It failed inspection because it had slightly tinted windows. Ridiculous. So I had to peel the tint off. Not a fun job. After over an hour I finally got it all. Now that that's over, I've got a car to drive and I'm not stuck at home if the weather is bad/I'm lazy. Good times.

Friendster

Two posts in one day? What's going on here?

The obsession with Friendster is getting out of control. My friends from home and D.C. are now emailing each other and asking me about them. What a weird yet funny phenomenon. It's actually a pretty good site to kill some time. I highly reccommend it. Good way to kill time at work.

Oh, and my last post I bitched about not having a mailbag. I should write everyday for my zero readers out there. That reminds me, I was walking to Lincoln Park earlier today, and was thinking how easy The Sports Guy has it. He gets to write one or two articles a week and sometimes a mailbag. I wish I had people writing to me here so I could have a mailbag. That would be sweet. I guess that would require me to write here a lot more, be way funnier, and actually have a point to this thing instead of just sitting down to write and not thinking about it beforehand (except thinking a mailbag would be cool). I wonder how much that guy actually makes.

Sammy Sosa is heading to the Orioles. I guess I'll get to see him a few times this year. Just goes to show Angelos is all about getting high profile players, that will not help the team. The O's need pitching, not old, steroid using, cork batting Sosa. He's a piece.

I went to Local 16 last night. It was the least crowded I've ever seen it. Usually you can barely breathe.

Caught Modest Mouse on Austin City Limits the other night. Pretty impressive group. Now if I can just find the Wilco performance, I'll be all set.

Enough rambling for now. Someone send me some email so I can start a mailbag.

Snow and more snow

D.C. is in the middle of it's first major snow storm of the season. We're expected to get 6-10 inches by this evening. This should effectively shut down the city for two days as they have no idea how to handle it. Two years ago we got 18 inches and the city was shut down for almost a week. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Of course this happens on a Saturday afternoon, so I'm stuck in my house. Maybe that's why I chose to update this thing for the first time in over a month. Oh well.

I got Wilco tickets for the 930 Club next month. I was lucky as they sold out real quick. Apparently they are filming for a DVD, so that should be interesting.

Is it immoral to get food delivered during a driving snow storm? I'm seriously contemplating it. I mean, I have no food in the house, and no car. I think I might have to get them to work for their money today. Yes, I am an asshole.

My first iMix

I just created my first iMix on iTunes. I know, I'm a huge loser, but I wonder what people will rank it? I started it off by ranking it a 5 (the highest). I also plugged this site in the liner notes. I'm a huge loser, and yes it is 9:40 on a Saturday night.

I saw Kill Bill Volumn II this afternoon. Very slow and very long. I liked the first one a lot better. I love Uma though. I've only had the DVD from Netflix for like two months. I've also got The Station Agent out, and need to see that tomorrow or something.

Apparently Wilco are playing at the 930 Club in February, but I can't find a link to tickets anywhere. I also heard they are filming the shows for a documentary. If you haven't figured it out already, I love Wilco. I can't believe I didn't discover them sooner.

D.C. How does the Chairwoman help put together the deal with the MLB, and then add an amendment at the last minute that will kill the deal? It's unreal. She is an idiot. Luckily, there are several sites popping up to inform people about how terrible Linda Cropp is. Check out www.dropcropp.com. I'm sure the one or two people who read this once in a while, have moved on.

Portugal was a blast. I'd never been to Europe before, so I really enjoyed going to a place that was more off the beaten path. It was great, but it's not easy to get there. 8 hour flight to Germany, then 2 hours to Portugal. Not the best, but really it was a lot better than I though. The European flights are so much better than the domestic ones here. You actually get real meals and free booze. Can't beat that.

I went home for Thanksgiving and that was a good time. My friends and I had the 2nd annual sweater dinner. I'm not sure I can really describe it other than a bunch of us going out to eat and wearing sweaters. Actually, that's exactly what it was. I'm back in Maine in about a week for xmas.

The Sox signed David Wells. I think this is a good pick up. Not too much money, and he's going to fit right in with the "Idiots." I just hope he doesn't show up drunk.

Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. I don't really have an excuse as to why I haven't posted. I haven't seen any movies or gone to any concerts. Just the typical. Work, eat, sleep, drink, and not always in that order. The exciting life of someone living on Capitol Hill.

Going to Portugal

On Tuesday I'm heading to Europe for the first time in my life. We are putting on a workshop in Porto on fuel cell buses. Yes, very exciting I know (only I actually think it is exciting). It will be very interesting to see how people over there deal with Americans, as I've heard we're not the most liked right now. Maybe I'll just say I'm Canadian or something.

I haven't written much lately, but I know of two people who sometimes read this thing, so I guess that's not really a big lost.

I don't think I've written about this, but my car was stolen last month. Most of the time this sucks, but this weekend I got to drive a Toyota Prius around, as we had a exhibition on Saturday. It's always nice to introduce people to the new hybrid technologies. Pretty soon, you won't be able to drive down the street without seeing one (in some parts of the country this is already happening).

Maybe I'll post when I'm in Portugal. That is, if I have an internet connection.

Four more years

Wow, that just doesn't sound good. George Bush beat John Kerry 51%-48% on Tuesday. I just don't get how people think the President has done a good job over the last four years. At least The Daily Show will continue to be funny. Now with stronger majorities in the House and Senate, there will be only one group to blame if things get worse. I'm interested to see what happens with the stalled energy bill and the thought of revamping social security. At least the President doesn't have to pander to the far-right anymore (or does he?). It sucks, but whatever.

In other news, I'm going to Portugal in a couple weeks for work. I've never been to Europe before and am really excited to go. I'll be gone for a week, and then it's back to Maine for Thanksgiving. How come all of my travel has to be back to back? Give me a break! I'm also going to Jamaica in April. I'm really looking forward to that one!

Tonight it's off to The Guards. A sweaty, gross bar in D.C. Sounds like college all over again. For one every room has a computer with a flat screen and a high speed internet connection (hence the posts two days in a row). Also, they hosted a reception for EDTA staff and our Board of Directions. Champagne for everyone! It was pretty nice. The place is huge. There are aligators in the center area and they are supposed to be a public feeding tomorrow night at 6:30. I'm going to try and go to that.

It's an odd feeling when you get on a plane and it's 55, and then get off and it's 92. This happened to me yesterday. Who would have thought there would be that big of a difference from Newark to Orlando in September?

Tomorrow is my biggest day at the conference. It is the Ride 'n' Drive. This is basically the day where people can drive the latest in electric, hybrid and fuel cell cars, trucks and buses. PBS will be here tomorrow too, so that should be cool. Getting up at 6:15 is not cool however.

What a weekend

It's been another busy weekend.
